Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
White noise has equal energy across every frequency, a bit hissy: great for masking a conversation or street noise. Pink noise loses energy in the highs (3 dB per octave), softer and more natural, close to steady rain. Brown noise loses even more in the highs (6 dB per octave), very deep and enveloping, often preferred for sleep.
Can I use it with headphones?
Yes, without any issue. All three noises are computed in stereo and sound just as good through headphones as through speakers. Many users lower the volume and wear light headphones to mask office noise.
How much memory and CPU does it use?
The audio engine only exists while playing: at rest, SeventyNoise drops to 0% CPU and keeps no audio thread running at all. While playing, computing the noise is trivial for any modern Mac.
Does the noise stop by itself?
Only if you turn on a sleep timer (30, 60 or 120 minutes) in the settings or when starting playback from the menu bar. By default, with no timer set, the noise keeps playing until you click Stop.
What's the difference between the website version and the App Store one?
It's the same app. On this website: a free 7-day trial, then a 6.90 CHF one-time license with automatic updates. On the App Store: direct purchase, updates through Apple. Pick whichever suits you.
